AFCF Scholarship Criteria/Assistant Coaches Scholarships

Coach of the Year Winners

  • When an AFCA/AFCF member coach wins the Coach of the Year Award - The Foundation will pay $1,000 to the school to assist in the education of each full-time assistant coach who was on staff during that particular football season. These coaches must be fully-paid members of the AFCA as of June 30 of the year in which the season occurs for which the honor is received. For example: You must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30, 2012, in order to be honored for accomplishments in the 2012 season.
  • This applies to NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
  • In March, a check and cover letter will be sent to the Athletic Director with a copy to the head coach.

National Champion Winners

  • When an AFCA/AFCF member coach wins a National Championship - The Foundation will pay $1,000 to the school to assist in the education of each full-time assistant coach who was on staff during that particular football season. These coaches must be fully-paid members of the AFCA as of June 30 of the year in which the season occurs for which the honor is received. For example: You must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30, 2012, in order to be honored for accomplishments in the 2012 season.
  • This applies to NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
  • In March, a check and cover letter will be sent to the Athletic Director with a copy to the head coach and award winner.

Assistant Coach of the Year Winner

  • When an AFCA/AFCF member assistant coach wins an Assistant Coach of the Year Award - The Foundation will pay $1,000 to the school to assist in the education of the Assistant Coach of the Year. The coach must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30 of the year in which the season occurs for which the honor is received. For example: You must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30, 2012, in order to be honored for accomplishments in the 2012 season.
  • This applies to NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
  • In March, a check and cover letter will be sent to the Athletic Director with a copy to the head coach and assistant coach of the year.

COMBINED - Coach of the Year Winners & National Championship Winners

  • When an AFCA/AFCF member coach wins both the Coach of the Year Award and the National Championship - The Foundation will pay $1,500 to the school to assist in the education of each full-time assistant coach who was on staff during that particular football season. These coaches must be fully-paid members of the AFCA as of June 30 of the year in which the season occurs for which the honor is received. For example: You must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30, 2012, in order to be honored for accomplishments in the 2012 season.
  • This applies to NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
  • In March, a check and cover letter will be sent to the Athletic Director with a copy to the head coach.

COMBINED - Coach of the Year Winners, National Championship Winners & Asst. Coach of the Year Winners

  • When an AFCA/AFCF member coach wins in all three categories: the Coach of the Year Award, National Championship and the Assistant Coach of the Year - The Foundation will pay $2,000 to the school to assist in the education of each full-time assistant coach who was on staff during that particular football season. These coaches must be fully-paid members of the AFCA as of June 30 of the year in which the season occurs for which the honor is received. For example: You must be a fully-paid member of the AFCA as of June 30, 2012, in order to be honored for accomplishments in the 2012 season.
  • This applies to NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What happens when a head coach moves? Does money follow the head coach to another school?

  • A - Money follows the assistant coach (the previous institution does not receive the money). The scholarship is to be used exclusively for the designated assistant coach for educational opportunities or professional development.

Q - What happens when an assistant moves?

  • A - Money goes to school where he is employed at the time the check is cut.

Q - What if the assistant coach is hired as a head coach after the season?

  • A - The coach still receives the scholarship for the previous season's accomplishments while an assistant.

Q - At NAIA or Division III Schools, are head coaches excluded from receiving funds?

  • A - Yes.

Q - If a coach wins a scholarship, but subsequently loses his job, and is not hired by another institution at the time checks are cut, what happens to the money?

  • A - The coach becomes ineligible for a scholarship.

Q - Can a strength coach receive a scholarship?

  • A - The coach can only receive a scholarship if he also coaches football on-field and is also classified as an "assistant", not if his only classification is "strength and/or conditioning coach."

Q - What happens if an assistant gets a head coaching position?

  • A - The coach still receives the money, because he was an assistant the year they received the award.

Q - Can a full time, on field, graduate assitant coach receive a scholarship?

  •  A - GA's are not eligible.  Assitants must be fulltime employees of the institution for the award season.
